Megan Mericle, a.k.a. Meg La Mer (she/they) is a writer, researcher, artist, communications professional and budding apprentice herbalist and small-scale organic agriculture enthusiast who lives and works on the unceded lands of Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal. They create macro (close-up) photography that deals with nature in dark and nocturnal scenes with an emphasis on abstract fields of colour, and how light, form, and energy interact in elemental ways. By focusing on and observing close-up aspects of organic life, they strive to create work that elicits a state of consciousness that cultivates respect for biodiversity in our ecosystems. Their work also examines why humans try to control, shape, quantify and impact nature, particularly in relation to electricity and its effects on the health of humans and our environment.
They are deeply passionate about how herbal medicine, food security, forests, permaculture, community cooperatives, acts of solidarity, and sustainable solutions such as building more urban greenhouses, parks, food forests and public gardens can contribute to a more accessible and egalitarian future for all species. Promoting local food systems, agricultural cooperatives, and herbal medicinal resources and access are important to Megan as they continue to learn more about our fascinating plant and fungi relatives and the complex web of ecosystems that supports all of us.
